"bla bla car"

I just recently signed up as a user of "bla bla car" that slowly gets more and more popularity here in Italy.

It took me over one year to take the step and sign in.

My first try was to give a lift to other people travelling with me from Milan to Rimini.
I found the application and website user friendly, and I could actually get payed directly on line. Not to mention that I know who is going to be with me according their "bla bla car" profile, or by Facebook profile.

photo www.blablacar.in
So I took two ladies and one young man with me. We left early in the morning in order to avoid traffic  but got jammed right in the middle. What I thought was 4 hour trip turned nearly 7 hours of driving, with over +30°C. At this point I must thank for the air co developers.

I also took people back in the end of the weekend, and had another try travelling with other people letting them to drive. Most drivers seem to be really friendly and helpful to pick me up places out of their route, and leave me as close as possible to the place I'm heading at. But no one is a taxi driver, and it is totally out of the question to let anyone seek places behind the back of god.

My Experience until now is positive.
I can trust these people by reading the opinion of other co-travellers and choose out of many possibilities. It is also a new opportunity to meet new people and learn to know their interests. It is truly bla bla the whole trip.
Some times we have friends in common.

Bla bla car actually was born in France and developed by Vincent Caron as Covoiturage, and in 2006 bought by Frederic Mazzella turning in to bla bla car. It seems to operate in 22 countries. (source: wikipedia)

photo www.forux.it

So how does it actually work?
First I signed in with my pc and then downloaded an application to my smartphone.
Then I seek for trips I'm interested in and make questions to the driver, such as place of pick up. Once we have a deal, I pay my part of the trip with the credit card I gave in during the registration progress. Also pay pall is  accepted. The amount of the trip is based on popularity of the driver, car he use and the length of the trip. Then I just wait the date to arrive and go with it.

The importance of Sight Seeing

The importance of Sight Seeing

How many times we visit a new city and we are confused and lost; disoriented?
I can tell you; many times. If I visit a new city, I need to relocate my brain in order to move in there.

As a travel guide in The Netherlands, and particularly in Amsterdam several years ago, I had the opportunity to learn to know people all over the globe.

Money savers often think that touring with the group is annoying, expensive and it is easier by on their own.  I have to disagree with it. To plan an itinerary takes time. And time is money.
Just to mention my last year's trip to Amsterdam for a weekend. Although I was "at home", all I could actually do in the weekend was to visit two or three neighbourhoods using rented bicycles.
With a city sight seeing I actually would enter to a church or museas.

When I am visiting a location for just a weekend, by doing it on my own, I miss actually everything. And concidering travel costs, it is a huge waist of time and money.
Specially if I sit the whole time in a tube. Like when visiting London. Just to move from one spot to another one takes time.

Two ways to make sure I do not miss a thing is to take a guided city sight seeing tour, and use the local "hop on hop of": Both of them.

photo www.tours-tickets.com
With a guided tour, I may have answer to a question, get a story of the city I visit told in different perspective and get ideas to organize my itinerary. Besides touring with a guide is a possibility to let professional work. If I can't trust the professionality of a guide, it would be a bit like not eating in a restaurant, because I am better chef. Not to speak of cutting hair, or bying clothes. I can't just do everything and pretend to be a master of history and orienteering.

photo it.city-discovery.com
Once I am finished with the city sight seeing, I sit down, have some coffee or tea, and plan my itinerary. Then I control wether the local "hop on hop of "company include my interest in it's route.
If not, then to save money I check up the tube, tramlines and local busses.
Sometimes I take a taxi cab, and let the driver show me he local interest, like I did on my stay in Cagliari. I had far too little time to visit, because of my busy working schedule. I decided to ask a local taxi driver to show me around.
To see the town in the perspective of a local people is once again more interesting.
But even they might not know it all.

Most cities in Italy are historically important and the whole country appears as an open air museum. How could possibly every one living person in here would know it all? They do not. They might know how important some local constructions are, what they were used for, and when they were built.
I can look those informations up from wikipedia. As a matter of fact, I can look up anything and not visit places at all.But it would be boring.

photo milano.repubblica.it
One of the interesting sites to visit with a guide for example is Milan's Monumental Cemetery. It is a lovely quiete place to visit, and every grave stone has it's story and it's history. Some stories are made and that's why the tour is so interesting. Like a story of a young girl that committed a suicide, after her boy friend died. (not referred to the photo) Just like in Romeo and Julliet. No one knows wether it's really true.

So if I am in a hurry or with a lot's of time, I truly consider of taking a professional tourist guide. That might help me save a lot's of money and time.

P.S. I am tour leader and not allowed to tour guide in Italy.
Please feel free to ask tour leader services.

Greek Christening

I was invited to visit a friend of mine and his family to Thessaloniki few years back, and while there his wife's relative got their child christened.

photo depositphotos.com

Where I come from, from Finland, christening happens in few months, if not weeks after the birth, because we don't give names to the babies in the hospital, and it's a kind of well kept secret too. So, in order to name them we need to christen babies or register in case of atheism, pretty soon.

But in Greece children can get christened at any age. In this particular case the child was 1 year old. In most of the countries new borns get some name parents need to register to the town hall, and the christening in the church then follows. If follows.

I was surprised of the quantity of the family members and friends they had invited to the church, since in Finland most people do the christening sort of privately at home with just close family and few friends. Also in Italy the christening is something among close family.

I remember that I found it all extremely hilarious there in Greece, because the whole procedure took huge amount of time; like 2h and every one in the church did what ever they pleased; mostly talked. I played games. LOL
The priest had to ask these people get quiete several times, and I couldn't stop mentioning that comparing to them Italians are pretty disciplined.

And this ain't all: that baby actually had a "full bath" in a bowl. With the help of both parents and the priest the child got undressed and then put in the bowl followed with all religious liturgy. It seemed to last for ages.
photo www.blessedcelebration.com
In some cases the kids walk to have a "bath" on their own, but that was not the case of the relative of my friend's family.
photo arollingcrone.blogspot.com

After the long ceremony, perhaps due to my new shoes I bought as a souvenir, the family in question shared something they also do in Italy: sugar covered amandels packed in a gift box or similar.
photo www.evivadesign.com

We were then invited for greek meze that stands for appetiser. For me it was a completely fullfilling meal. It lasted nearly 3 hours and we also got to celebrate the babies' 1st birthday.

It was truly amazing to see women in 5 generation. The person I thought was a grandmother of that christened child was actually the grandmother of the mother, and she had her mother with her.

It was one of the nicest thing my friend's family could have done to me, by inviting me there.

Airline Companies, part 6: Low cost airline carriers

This is probably the part that interest most readers. Low cost airlines

photo www.ilgiornale.it
Ryan Air, that is another Irish airline company has just reasently started few flights from Milan Malpensa, but it flights in such odd places to me I have really low interest by taking it. I used to fligh a lot with Ryan Air when it had campaigns of 2€ flights taxes included. I really troubled of waking up at 4 am, drive to Orio al Serio near Bergamo, and flight to Ibiza for 5€. But make me take a flight to Luton sit 2h in a bus or in a train to get to London, I calculated that it would then cost me just as much as the British Airlines offer to Heathrow. And with the tube I'm in down town.  Ryan Air gives nothing at all and it has no companies with whom they co-operate. So no points to be earned. I have consumed seats with Ryan Air and I have got just what I payed for. Their website nerves me of. If I want to book a flight I have to be really really fast unless I want to get kicked out in the middle of the transaction. Then it asks several time a this stupid code to make sure I am not a machine. It is so difficult to book a flight so that I'm ready with other airline companies before I even get started with Ryan Air. Just to give you an example: My sister tried to book a flight from Tampere to Milan Orio al Serio with her partner and two minors, and she lost the best deals because the website went off due to exceed the time limit they give for transactions.
https://www.ryanair.com

Photo wizzair.com
Te Hungarian Wizz Air has the most peculiar club to customers. First of all the webdesing is really complicate. Once you get through of what you want, such as membership, then follows up that your booking doesn't acccept your membership if someone else pays for your ticket. Usually the person who travels with the company has the benefit, not the one who pays for it. Otherwise all the companies who pay for their employees shoud earn points and no one flights awards since they are not real persons. Like Siemens. How do you give award flights to Siemens?
What I appreciated of Wizz Air was their security and the fact that they seem to know EU law regulations pretty well. For the very first time anyone travelling with minors was asked to show the permission of the other parent and the family status.
Anyone could actually kidnap a kid and go anywhere because only few airline companies pay attention to such important matter. My flights were from Milan Orio al Serio to Prague and back home. https://wizzair.com

Air Baltic I once took from Milan to Helsinki wasn't that bad at all. Nowadays their price to Helsinki are higher than what Finnair for example suggest. Each stop over makes you spend nearly 20€ more for food and beverage. Why not include it to the trip from the very beginning and figure out that the most expensive flight turns out to be the cheapest one. This company is not cheap, although their newsletter promises flights starting from 15€. Nor are their flights are combined. Flights are also too close with landing  and departure time and so that you really need to add an insurance (read: more extra fee) or it could also happen that some connecting flights departure day after, witch requires night in a hotel
(read: extra expenses) https://www.airbaltic.com

photo www.airberlin.com
Air Berlin, I took some years ago, from Milan to Helsinki actually had really a good deal: We could buy the higher category at top bonus programme and profit some benefits, such as bring bicykles or surf boards for free. There is no such deal today. Nor is there a possibility to book a flight directly from their website from Milan to Helsinki. First I need to book a flight to any German city and try to connect it to a flight from that city to Helsinki. Pretty complicated. And this actually pisses me off, because Air Berlin is doing co operation with Finnair and Etihad and I never manage to use my points in award flights. Unless I decide to fly to Berlin.
No food, nor beverage will be served. That was the politics at least few years ago.

photo www.theaustralian.com.au
Tiger Air that I took for my flight from Cairns to Sydney was similar to our very own Irish Ryan Air. Very similar with tight schedule. First of all it required printed ticket, becuse the electronic one wasn't allowed. They mentioned that check-in desk would close 45 minutes before departure, while it actually closed 60 minutes before. That could cause some real trouble to the passengers. Not fair politics. Flight went well and we pre ordered food to go. I must admit that this company made me feel hilarious because of all that tiger stuf.  http://www.tigerair.com

Let me know how your low cost experiences went. Leave a comment behind.

Airline Companies, part 5: Not that satisfied

Some airline companies didn't satisfy my deeds properly

photo from www.aviationwa.org.au

I wasn't that found of Virgin Australia although I think Richard Branson is a genius. I had 3 flights with them: one from sydney to Dubai, and two inland flights. All flights were smooth but something just troubled me. Perhaps it was just how the airport personal behaved. They behave like they are pissed of. My experience on flight from Melbourne to Sydney let me understand that Virgin Australia would actually give me some films to watch if only I download the application first. And I did it in order to watch movies on my flight from Sydney to Cairns. This didn't happened. They insisted me to hire their tablet to watch films.  Also some flights were late, such the one from Melbourne to Sydney. It would have been nice if it was mentioned, since I had to run trhough custom and luggage delivery. And although I had booked by Etihad, and should have enjoyed the meal ad beverages between Melbourne and Sydney, this wasn't on programme.
Perhaps it was Etihad that should have mentioned about it. Virgin Australia doesn't seem to regon points to Etihad although it's a partner.
Really disappointing.

Less pleasent was my flight with the Indonesian Merpati Airlines from Bali to Lombok.
I really thought we were going to crash.
I was a guest with Club Med at Bali and their tour to Lombok included a flight with Merpati.
(Club Med should check up their safety standards.

Alitalia flight attendants have that "hey bro" attitude; a bit like I should be happy they even exist. Something I would expect visiting Jamaica. Webside is not user friendly:  Once I start to book, I can't find any of the deals, the carry on plane is not theirs and the total amount of my flights turns to be higher than the world tour with Qantas.
Or perhaps I'm only too critical towards Alitalia.   https://www.alitalia.com

Airline Companies, part 4: not bad at all

Not bad at all, but it didn't leave any markable impression either

photo www.staralliance.com
Many many years ago I flew with Singapore Airlines, from Amsterdam to Singapore and from Singapore to Bali and back. At that time the airline company was admired by it's pleasant service and extremely beautiful hostesses. Perhaps this makes impression to a male traveller, but I look more comfort and service. Leg space and food&beverage are important to me too. I get pretty hungry in a flight of 16 hours.
I remember I had a pleasant flight with good food.
http://www.singaporeair.com

photo www.dallasnews.com
It is a long time ago when I last flew to the states and took American Airlines. If I remeber well, we had a two hour delay from Heathrow and I was asked to change my flight, bcause an other carrier got btoken and they needed to give seats to those who had connecting flights. Only I couldn't because I didn't know who to contact in Washigton DC about my later arrival. It was pre cell phone time. After all, my flight was the one late for 2 hours. It was about the time when American airlines was far too often in the news due to the crash or other problems.  https://www.americanairlines.com

An other airline company I haven't taken for ages is Swiss airline. I once flew back home to Finland with the company from Italy, and at the time I thought it was fancy. https://www.swiss.com/

Airline companies part 3: Finnair, Lufthansa and SAS

My home is in Italy and I was born in Finland.
This means that I live like I had one foot in two shoes.

I need to take a flight back home several times in a year and I try of course save some money too. Not that easy, because Finland apparently charge too high airport taxes to attract low cost airline companies. What the following airline companies actually did some years ago, was to apply the same methods as low cost airlines, only rising their prices. It is probably best for the airline company, but in the eyes of the final customer it looks like they are cheating. If I had a flight one of the following companies some years ago, it included 20 kg luggage, 7 or 8 kg carry on bag and some food and beverage during my flight. Today none of those, unless I pay more, more, more and more again.

photo www.fft.it

Finnair is the airline of my nation, and yet I have difficulties to rate it. It is punctual and clean. With higly educated airline personal. But it leaves me cold. I know I should be proud of it, since it is rated one of the 10 best airline companies world wide. I don't like the new low cost airline politics thought,  since they apparently copied it from SAS. If I payed earlier 250€ to my flight from Milan to Helsinki earning full ponts, with the new marketing politics I pay the same, get low cost service and 25% of the points. They serve some coffee, tea, water and blueberry juice for free. Sometimes food is finished for the middle roads unless I pre order it in advance. Finnair used to be generous many years ago. I have won award flights on lotteries. Finnair's programme is called Finnair Plus and it is with oneworld group just like British Airways, Iberia and so on. https://www.finnair.com

photo www.austrian.com
Lufthansa is defenitely on my TOP 10 chart. Until recently they allowed l 23 kg luggage, a small carry on bag and gave food and beverage during the flight. Now their policy is closer to low cost airline. I trouble out with including a luggage. I never know wether there is food and beverage.
My last flight to Finland was a bit bumpy due to the heavy snow storm over the alps, and yet pilots and flight attendants made me feel comfortable. Lufthansa has add some fruit and yoghurt to their food selection that I appreciate.
And I appreciate the professionally of the hostesses, and stuarts not pretty young girls or boys, but mature people with experience and responsibility. I think airline companies shouldn't push too much for model look alike. I want good quality, not Milan fashion week.I live in Milan and we have plenty of model look alike walking in the streets.
Just to give you the idea of how excellent Lufthansa is, is the luggage they lost. My luggage did't arrive on time, and the handling company in the end destination messed up with it,  and since I had no receipts of things that got broken or food that went bad, Lufthansa gave me a teapot and a cup I truly appreciate. Lufthansa is with Star Alliance group among with Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines and so on, and Lufthansa award member group is named Miles&More.
http://www.lufthansa.com

photo it.avia.pro
SAS the Scandinavian Airline company. I flew several times through  different cities. From Milan mostly and towards Helsinki, from where I originally come from.
SAS has turned totally to low cost airline just like Lufthansa and Finnair. They're marketing politics is to sell old normal price flights for more delivering less points and services.  I understand that by doing so it gives some freedom to customers to choose their meal, and beverage. But most families rather drink and eat nothing, if it has an extra cost of nearly 100€, comparing few years ago, when it was all inclusive.  Nowadays SAS serves, coffee, tea, water and blueberry juice for free. Everything else is to be bought on flight or pre-ordered in advance. I keep on getting newsletters from SAS that publish cheap flights, but each time I need to take of, my flight turns out as expensive as a flight around the world with Qantas.
I once won an award flight with SAS on a lottery: When they had more generous company policy. SAS is with Star Alliance group among with Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines and so on.http://www.flysas.com

What are your experiences with these airline companies? Please feel free to comment.

Airline Companies part 2: Air Serbia Etihad, Emirates and EasyJet

We are so used to things we hardly never make changes, and yet they might turn out positive surprises, such as my flight with the following airline companies:

photo worldairlinenews.com
I was positively supriced about the Serbian airline company; Airserbia
I took my flight from Milan to Belgrade and I was truly impressed.
What happens nowadays with European airline companies, is that they cut from most services. Like, no food, or baggage. Like if we didn't need stuff with us to where we go, or we won't get hungry and thirsty on plane. Airserbia hasn't cut them yet. That's probably because they belong to the Etihad group.
https://www.airserbia.com

photo www.webeconomia.it
I had Etihad on my way to Australia in 2014.
I thought I wouldn't be seated next to any man, since I am a single white woman travelling. On a contrary both ways. Men all over. LOL
My flight to Australia was from Milan Malpensa airport, where the Etihad airport handling personal gave me wrong instructions of my final destination. Since the flight went through Melbourne to Sydney I found it peculiar that my luggages would fly directly to Sydney and customed out there. As a matter of fact, I needed to custom my luggages at Melbourne. Not that it ruined my flight. It only made me run to get an other flight.
For the rest all flights went just perfectly and I was kept full with food and beverage continuously. The seats are comfortable and the entertainment system is pretty wide. I truly enjoyed the music part that had also arab and indian music with it. It excluded films  that might have something to do with nudity and had a wide selection Bollywood material. Also Abu Dhabi airport was comfortable.
I was impressed of the quantity of the different class it's possible to choose to flight with Etihad. From "low low low cost" up to the royal class. I flew with the regular low cost.
The point system with Etihad isn't really clear. Since the airline company co-operates with several other companies, such as Virgin Australia,  Virgin Australia does't seem to regon points of flights bought by other airline companies. Next to the regular partnership they also have mutual partnership with many other airline companies, such as KLM. http://www.etihad.com

photo www.viaggiarenews.com
An other far east company I flew was Emirates, from Milan to Bangkok. The flight was just perfect, Dubai airport I found far too big and confusing, and a lots of shops. I need a larger salary to visit all shops. And too many hours between combine flights. Emirates points might turn out usefull with Easy Jet flights.  And it is really clearly pointed out in their membership programme. This airline company has little or none really "knock me of" deals.  As a matter of fact, I chose them just out of curiosity. http://fly4.emirates.com

photo www.viaggiarenews.com
EasyJet is the company I use most often. First of all, I think they have absolutely brilliant marketing politics. They actually build and keep airports on going. Like Milan Malpensa Terminal 2. It is totally and only for Easy Jet flights. Besides the web pages and application, they really have given out some cash to make everything really simple. It is the iPhone of the airline companies. I want that webdesigner and app maker to work with me too. Easy Jet as far as I understood, is doing co-operation with Emirates. No points with Easy Jet, but with Emirates points is possible to take an award flight with Easy Jet.
I think it's brilliant. I don't mind at all when the flight attendants sell products. I only wish they used right terms to propose them. Easy Jet is like a second home to me.
(please feel free to award me with upgrade or free flights, LOL)

Airline Companies part 1 KLM and AirFrance

In my short 50 years of age, I have taken few airplanes

There are some particularities in each airline company I'd like to point out.

What ever flight you take, make your loved one the co-pilot
(aforism for love life, facebbok page)

photo www.pilotcareernews.com
By my saying the best airline company is KLM. I lived in the Netherlands for over 10 years and took KLM regularly. And this airline company has never let me down. Besides the fact that their personal is highly qualified, multilingual and professional, those planes hardly never land late. KLM is a part of Skyteam. Seats are spacious: they are made to fit dutch passangers, that are in the statistic the highest population in the world.
At KLM flights I have always been treated well, and I have consumed some seat up there.
Once when we got back from Guayaquil making a stop over to Bonaire, we got business seats due to the membership of Flying Blue programme. So thank you so much.
I have flown with KLM to China, to Italy Greece and to Finland from the Netherlands, To USA, and so on. https://www.klm.com

photo www.queerty.com
I had a taste of AirFrance, also a member of Skyteam, while on my trip to Montreal.
We had some inconvenience with the departure time, that was later than planned, and thus got back the total amount of the tickets. Not bad from Sky team.
The flight from Paris to Montreal was smooth in both ways, and I guess I slept most of the time, because I remember so very little out of it.

Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary

In the summer of 2015 I had this wonderful change to work as a tour guide for an Italian tour operator, that sent me to Prague for a month. At one of the free days I had, I took a trip to Karlovy Vary.

Why did I chose to go there?

I had no idea what Czech Republic would offer once I got to Prague to lead my groups. So my dear colleague who'd been Prague several times before, led me to learn to know all those lovely places. Starting from Karlovy Vary.

Karlovy Vary was settled early at bronze age as a fortification, and later in 1300 people started to recognise the curative effect it's spring water gave. And as all natural thermal spas also this one was actually "founded" by Romans. "Carlo the 4th" went there for the inspection round 1370. The story tells that Karel the 4th went to a Loket Castle and one day when he was out for hunting his dog got in to a boiling spring. Karel and his company tasted the water and with the help of his personal doctor figured out that such water could actually help to get better if not get cured from various illnesses.
On a contrary of many thermal spas where people go to have bath only, in Karlovy Vary the spring water is to be drink.

There are as many as 15 springs that have different effect on a human body. What I should have done was to have a medical check up first and then drink only from those springs that are good to me. But I was hasty and didn't think wisely. The most famous spring there is called Vřídlo  (I had to copy and paste the name in order to have it written correctly). This particular spring shoots the water out up to 12 meter high with the capability of 2000 l/minute and with the temperature of nearly 74°C

Lets not waist any more time:I then run trough all the springs with a funny cup made to look like a small teapot and a cup all together and drank the water. The cup is something I need to buy, while the spring water is for free.

What comes to dining out, the prices for food and drink are just as expensive (or cheap) as in EU generally, comparing to other Czech Republic, where drinking beer is still cheaper than drinking water. Mario's Pizza was what I expected in Czech Republic. Nothing like at Naples thought. But at least I could afford it. Karlovy Vary was known as Monte Carlo of the Eastern Europe. It had famous and rich tourists mostly from Russia and other east block countries. To admire famous people is still possible, since Karlovy Vary has it's Film Festival end of June or beginning of July. Check the dates from the link below.

One of the many things I had to try was this typical drink:

It's a sort of herbal liquor that I was advised to drink after diner. Although I bought one at home, I still haven't opened it yet. Some things are just perfect right there, from where they originally come from.

Besides of the thermal Spa and springs I also wondered around, to have a look.Walking out there is so relaxing.

It was a fully immersion to a beauty. I think I have never seen such beauty anywhere else. And just as all thermal locations, also Karlovy Vary has it's most tourist at elderly age. No disco's nor bars open after 10 pm. Not that I needed one. I was tired after walking over 15 km and drinking all that water.

How did I got there? Simple. By a bus from Prague. These bus lines offer really an excellent service. For the price of the ticket I got newspaper I couldn't read and a cup of tea. I could buy some coffee and chocolate bars if I wanted to. Just like in low cost airlines, or in a train. We had a hostess that delivered everything. And in the bus I had free movies and free wifi.

Karlovy Vary is really a popular tourist attraction so if you want to go there from Prague, book your return bus trip straight away. I lost my chance to go back with my colleague, and stayed one night extra. Not that it mattered. I loved it.

My one person's hotel room booked with booking.com cost me with breakfast 40€ a night.

Karlovy Vary also has it's own airport. It carries mostly Russian tourist.
